Wow. It's about 10.15 p.m. and we have only just finished - however I think my feet were finished a while ago...
We rose incredibly early - I think our bodies were still on UK time, so we had a fabulous breakfast which amply met my need for pancakes, crispy bacon and maple syrup. The hotel is utterly wonderful by the way - The Kendall is a converted Fire Station, and a Historic Inn of America. I don't think we could have got a better place to stay. Photos of the main lobby tomorrow before we leave!
Anyway - we leapt onto the T - the Boston subway, and headed to the Prudential Centre to pick up a Duck Tour (I'll cover that later) - but as the mist was still shrouding the tops of the skyscrapers, we decided to wonder off to the Christian Science Plaza. Not that we are 'into' the religion - the photo ops are magic. A huge still flat 'lake' with a facsimile of St Peters in Rome by its side. With the mist still clouding the sky, the light was very photo friendly.
The next stop (after a Pumpkin Spice Latte from Starbucks - mmmmm!) was the Duck tour. Our 'Duck' (an amphibious vehichle) was a bright lavendar affair driven by a "Major Groovy" - an aging hippy with a laidback sardonic wit and a wonderful tour guide.
After a splashdown into the Charles River, we finished the tour and headed off to the USS Constitution.
The Naval Yard was a delight for Pa, a 22 gun frigate from 1795 - the USS Constitution alongside the USS Cassin Young - a World War II Destoyer. Both proved to be a superb photo op!
Then a fortunate cab ride along the river with a drop off at Harvard Square ended the afternoon. The campus is amazing. Plenty of America's rich kids playing volleyball, sitting around looking intellectual (but they are probably thinking "What happened last night in Buffy?"
A brief sojourn into a shop to buy a watch - a lovely new Swiss Army watch. I have attempted to find the bottle opener and hoof de-clagger, but so far they are elluding me....
Dinner in the hotel - american cuisine and a martini to polish it off - and a quick T ride to Fanueil Hall and Quincy Market for a wonder. The nearby Holocaust memorial is staggering. 4 glass chimmeys engraved with numbers, with steam rising from grills at the base. Moving and poignant.
Anyway - check out the New England October 2005 photo album....
Tomorrow brings check out and a drive north to New Hampshire - and hopefully some fall colours. Can't wait!!
Kx
