OK - so it not actually Day Two, but it feels it. Why am I up at 5 am?! Very early nights do that do you....
Anyway -we left Boston midmorning, and heading up the Route 1, to Portsmouth. The Rough Guide provided us with some fabulous recommendations for lunch, and we settled on The Friendly Toast.
Wow.
What a place! I am impressed with anywhere where the female chef wears gold lurex. The place was kitted out in HUGE amounts of 50's and 60's kitsch stuff. Bonkers. Utterly bonkers. The milkshakes were to die for and the Matt No.2 Sandwich is heartily recommended....
We then struck NW towards the B&B, getting off the main interstates and driving up the smaller roads. This gave dad a great view of genuine american life. He was unfeasibly chuffed to see 'proper' mailboxes - with flags and everything! The colours of fall are really starting to look fab.
The Riverbend Inn is our home for the next 3 nights - and what a home! My room is fab - I have a bed I need a stepladder to get into - I feel like I am in the Princess and the Pea! Divine! Breakfast is in 3 hours, but I have high hopes...
As the weather was SO good - we struck out for Kancamagus Highway late afternoon, which we were informed was in its peak week of fall foliage. It was stunning. The photos just don't do it justice, but the memories of seeing it are enough.
Some of the (many!) photos are in the album...
We finished off the day in The Met Coffee House in North Conway for coffee and cake - I now have a shiny new thermal coffee mug - lime green BTW.... Tomorrow (well - today) is another packed day, so I will update asap!
Kx
